Uses of Electrotherapy in Chiropractic
Electrotherapy is a unique modality that is used to enhance your chiropractic treatment. Its main purpose is to help reduce the intensity of muscle spasms commonly found in the back. Electrotherapy, in this case called interferential current, works by stimulating the muscles repeatedly to deplete them of their energy stores forcing them to fatigue. When this happens, muscle tension is decreased and blood flow perfusion to the affected area is enhanced. Nutrients are brought into the muscles via the increased blood flow and toxins that were sequestered within the taut muscles are released into the blood for excretion. Interferential current also has a very therapeutic sensation similar to a buzzing massage. Not only do patient enjoy the electrotherapy feeling, it also allows for easier adjustments for the patient and for the doctor.
